On Thursday 21st March, Lia Nici MP’s project, Opportunity Grimsby, took its first major step with the delivery of an employment experience day to students at the John Whitgift Academy, Grimsby, alongside several local firms.
Students, having selected from the above organisations, were transported to sites across Grimsby to learn more about the jobs on offer with local firms, speak with recent graduate entrants, tour facilities and network with employers.
This marks the first major step in Lia Nici’s project, Opportunity Grimsby, which seeks to partner secondary school students with local employers, to show them the jobs and opportunities on offer to them in Grimsby and provide them with the personal and professional skills they need to thrive in the working world.
Lia Nici MP said: “The day went brilliantly, and the pupils loved it. It’s so important that we show our young people the job opportunities that are on their doorstep in Grimsby and support them to nurture the skills they need to hit the ground running once they leave school and enter the workplace. I want to say a massive thank you to all of the organisations involved, and the John Whitgift Academy for their collaboration on this project, which is already getting students thinking about their futures and next steps”.
Simon Bird, Director of the Humber ports said: “We were delighted we could host pupils from John Whitgift School as part of this Opportunity Grimsby visit. They were able to see firsthand the Port of Immingham and explore the many opportunities we have here. It was great they took part in a speed networking session with our graduates who were able to answer their quick-fire questions and give an insight into the array of roles and skills needed for a career within the ports”.
A VPI representative said: “We felt the meeting went well today with the students, they were interactive, and I hope we captured their interest – our team really enjoyed meeting them”.
