Several constituents have been in touch with me recently about cancer, which remains one of the most serious and important issues facing our society. I met with Mercia from Cancer Research UK today, to find out more about the work that they're doing to combat cancer, and support those living with it.
Cancer will affect almost 1 in 2 of us during our lifetimes, and, although we've made massive progress in improving outcomes for those diagnosed with cancer, there's still work to be done until we can find a cure.
Given the importance of this task, I'm pleased that the Government has invested in a £47.5 million partnership with Cancer Research UK, the National Institute for Health Research and the Little Princess Trust to deliver early phases of clinical research to work on new treatments. A further £22.5 million is also being spent on cancer research to develop new immune-based cancer therapies.
I'm proud to support Cancer Research's ambition to prevent 20,000 deaths a year by 2040, and I want to thank Mercia and others who came to Parliament today to talk to me.
If you or someone you know is affected by cancer, there's a lot of support available from Cancer Research UK on their website, here: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/coping...
