It was a pleasure to visit Ørsted recently to attend their celebration event, marking ten years of investment in the Humber region by the company. Ørsted first decided to come to Grimsby in 2012 and have since invested hugely into our local area. It is estimated that they have directly invested £45 million into the Humber region’s education, skills development, and local community, such as the £1 million they have contributed to the Horizon Youth Zone project.
Since 2017, 21 apprentices have been trained at Ørsted’s East Coast Hub, which is their operations centre here in Grimsby. Over the next ten years they will look to provide over 80 more apprenticeships out of the East Coast Hub, which will be all be here within the constituency. The number of people employed at their East Coast Hub will also increase to over 800 by 2030 - an additional 250 jobs in the green economy. ub, HubH
Grimsby has been neglected since 1970s. Now, we are the centre of the UK for operations and maintenance of offshore wind – with the East Coast Hub being the world’s largest offshore wind operations & maintenance centre – and are absolutely key to the future stability of the UK’s energy sector.
It is key that we can provide our constituents with the right skills to access the jobs that companies such as Ørsted have to offer. In coming years, we will see a huge increase in high skilled jobs in the Humber region, and we have to make sure that this directly benefits residents here in Great Grimsby. This is why I am lobbying the Prime Minister, the Education Secretary and the Business Secretary to do everything we can to make accessing these jobs as easy as possible for the people of Great Grimsby. The Prime Minister is very impressed with how far we have come with our wind sector in recent years and wants to see Grimsby thrive with the help of companies such as Ørsted.
