Every year, the MPs for Grimsby and Cleethorpes invite the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire and their consort down to Parliament for the day. They have a tour and we take them for lunch and this year, we were really happy to welcome the Mayor Terry Walker and his consort Hazel Chase, who was the Mayor previously in 2018.
On that day, just by chance, Austin Mitchell, ex-MP for Grimsby, was there as well and we all enjoyed a coffee together. It’s a great tradition to uphold and something that’s thoroughly enjoyable, it’s a unique day out for our Mayor and their consort so every year that’s a tradition that will continue.
It’s important for local and national politicians work closely together, no matter what their political leanings are. It’s much better for the area if we all work together for the betterment of the borough, so it’s important for the councillors to see the work that we do. Obviously, with the pandemic, we’ve not been able to do as much as we would normally do but inviting colleagues down to Parliament is important.
We’ve had quite a lot of meetings where the Chief Executive comes down for meetings, as well as the Leader and Deputy Leader of the council too. Sometimes we have meetings in Number 10, depending on what we’re doing. But of course, in a lot of situations, we can’t take photos of what’s going on, but certainly working with our local politicians is vital to what we do.
