Scouting is alive and well in the Grimsby area and I was honoured to attend the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Scout District’s award ceremony. Martin Vickers, MP for Cleethorpes, and I were invited to present prizes and it was great to not only meet the scouts and guides themselves but the new and existing leaders as well. Without the leaders, there would be no future for scouting and guiding in the Grimsby area.
It’s always good to see young people get involved in scouting because of the transferable skills that they can acquire from these organisations. Hearing some of the stories about how young people have developed thanks to being a part of their local scout groups are really exciting and inspiring and the skills that they’ve learned will set them up well into adulthood. It’s important to support these kinds of initiatives, especially those that support young people because it all comes back to skills development and growth in our area.
Scouts and guides have been a part of the fabric of our society for so long now that I think a lot of people may not think about scouting and guiding, but it’s a modern organisation where you can learn relevant skills and challenge yourself. You can put yourself in a situation you would perhaps normally avoid, but do so in a safe way, and that’s what scouting and guiding can offer.
It’s so important in the world that you get new connections to network with people and not only does scouting and guiding offer that, but there’s also the opportunity for international travel as part of their activities. Young people should seriously consider joining scouts and guiding if they’re looking to develop themselves as they remain very important organisations to this day.
