On May 11th, I had an on-line meeting with Kwasi Kwarteng, Minister of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
We discussed the proposed 'carbon capture and storage' scheme for the Humber region, which would route a pipeline transporting carbon dioxide emissions from heavy industry including the South Humber Bank cluster out to sea and then compressed into storage in depleted oil and gas fields under the sea bed. This would be a world-leading project. and part of this Government's massive commitment to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Some £800m has been earmarked for this new technology, which will create thousands of highly skilled, well paid jobs. I will also be seeking a meeting the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak over the next few months to ascertain the funding position given the very difficult economic situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. We are not the only area in the UK looking to be the first to develop this technology, but I'll be making the case as to why it should be our area. The article below gives more detail of the scheme.
