I recently visited the Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union facility which is inside the wonderful Grimsby Central Library building. There, I met Quinn and Sally who runs the Grimsby branch, we discussed with them what exactly a credit union is and why it can be a benefit to Great Grimsby constituents.
HEY Credit Union provides a community bank, where those who open accounts with them effectively become shareholders. They promote borrowing from reputable sources, diverting people away from doorstep loans and loan sharks.
One of the more fascinating projects they are working on is encouraging children in schools to open savings accounts and are already working with some local schools to promote a school's saving scheme. This, in the current economic climate, is a wonderful way to teach children about financial security and set them up for their future.
Quin and Sally do great work in helping constituents out financially and it was a pleasure to visit and see what they do. If you would like to find out more about their services, I have included a link below. People can also visit their branch at Grimsby Central Library on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 10am and 2pm, or can find them at Centre4 on a Tuesday, West Marsh Community Centre on a Wednesday, and Freeman Street Market on Fridays.
