Today was International Workers Memorial Day. I attended a small ceremony in Grimsby to lay a plastic-free, fully biodegradable wreath to commemorate the day and remember people killed or wounded around the world while doing their jobs.
White chrysanthemums for mourning, white roses meaning loyalty (to their work) and white carnations to send workers good luck for their safety.
I added a small wooden trawler to remember our own fishermen of the past, but also to acknowledge that fishing is still the world’s most dangerous profession.
Last year research commissioned by the FSH Safety Foundation estimated that at least 100,000 people died in fishing industry-related accidents across the globe.
St Andrew is the patron saint for fishermen, so his flower, the thistle, is also in the wreath.
