Along with most Lincolnshire MPs last week, I took part in a virtual meeting with the Greater Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership (LEP). One topic that came up was the need for people to work on farms at harvest time to make sure that our food supply is strong and we don't end up with food rotting in the fields because of a shortage of workers. It's clear that we are going to have a shrinkage in the economy and there will be an increase in the number of people without work, at least in the short/medium term. We have relied heavily on migrant labour to work in the fields and packing sheds for many years, but as we leave the EU that supply will dwindle. We need to maximise the jobs available for UK citizens to provide employment for as many people as possible. When I was younger it was fairly standard for students and other young people (including myself) to spend their summers earning money by working on local farms. I have heard it said that we are now too soft or lazy for that sort of hard physical work. I don't agree! There are lots of initiatives starting up, and I will do what I can to help them succeed in this area. https://www.greaterlincolnshirelep.co.uk/whats-new/lets-help-feed-the-uk/
